INTRODUCTION

Global challenges, such as overconsumption of natural resources, various types of environmental pollution and health issues, the impacts of climate change, and loss of biodiversity have become increasingly evident. Societies are now more aware of the challenges than ever, and understand more deeply that sustainability is essential to economic success and environmental protection. In the chemical industry, process and product sustainability becomes a focal point in deriving feasible solutions for its sustainable development. In this direction, global effort and international collaboration can contribute greatly.

Since 2007, the international conferences on Sustainable Chemical Product and Process Engineering (SCPPE) have been very successfully held triennially with sponsorship from China NSF, US NSF, and other organizations and attracted a large number of attendees from around the world. As the 5th SCPPE event, the 2019 SCPPE is being organized by Tianjin University, Tianjin, China.

    The 5th International Conference on Sustainable Chemical Products and Process Engineering conference will be held in Tianjin from June 30th to July 3rd, 2019, hosted by Tianjin University. The theme of the conference is 'New Pathways towards Sustainable Product and Process Engineering'. Since 2007, the conference has received strong support from the Natural Science Foundation of China, the Natural Science Foundation of United States and the majority of academic colleagues. The 5th conference focuses on the current global environmental pollution, resource scarcity, energy security and climate major challenges. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners in various fields to discuss sustainable chemical production and frontier trends, research hotspots, practical challenges and solutions for process areas.

    Ms Jiaming Chen (Master of Grade 2016) fabricated a highly dispersed MoS2 catalyst supported on CeLaOx solid solution, which significantly prompted the sulfur-resistant methanation by enhancing the coupling between CO hydrogenation and water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction. It was found that the methanation rate is determined by CO hydrogenation since WGS reaction approaches its equilibrium on the as-prepared catalyst. This work was published in Ind. Eng. Chem. Res. as a supplementary cover story. (DOI: 10.1021/acs.iecr.8b04296) The corresponding author of this work is Associate Prof. Yujun Zhao

    On December 7, 2018, Professor Liu Zhongwen, a specially appointed professor of Yangtze River Scholars, visited the C1 chemistry & technology laboratory and presented a wonderful report on the high-efficiency Ni-based catalyst for CH4-CO2 pressure reforming of syngas to the teachers and students of the Chemical Engineering College at Xie Kechang Press Hall.Professor Liu first introduced the development status of C1 chemical industry and the opportunities and challenges faced by heterogeneous catalysts. Next, Professor Liu briefly introduced the research contents of efficient utilization of carbon and directional catalytic conversion in the combined gas. The biggest challenge in the design of C1 chemical catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis is that the product distribution is too complex. Therefore, it is important to break the product distribution rule, improve the yield of unit active metal and improve the activity and stability of catalyst.On December 6, 2018, Professor Zhong Chongli, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Tianjin University of Technology, visited the C1 chemistry & technology laboratory and presented an excellent report on genomics design, preparation and screening of MOF/COF materials in Xie Kechang Presentation Hall.In the interactive session, the teachers and students present had a thorough discussion with Professor Zhong on whether the material genome could give material properties.     2017.11.02, The editor-in-chief of Journal of CO2 Utilization Sang-Eon Park visited our labs and gave an academic report on carbon dioxide.Professor Sang-Eon Park is the director of the Laboratory of Nano-Green Catalysis and Nano Center for Fine Chemicals Fusion Technology at Inha University at Incheon, Korea. He has received a PhD in Chemistry (1981) from KAIST, South Korea. Professor Park serves on the editorial boards of several scientific journals and as an advisory member of several leading international conferences. His achievements include the publication of more than 350 papers in the scientific literature and 65 patents. His current research interest involves carbon dioxide utilization as soft oxidant and promoter. Professor Park’s vision is to lay the scientific and technological foundation to bridge CO2 research and industrial application to underpin the development of sustainable future technologies. His research interests also include green chemistry, organic-inorganic hybrid materials, synthesis of hierarchical zeolites and nanoporous materials and their catalytic applications, heterogeneous organocatalysis, and energy and environmental alleviation by microwave and photocatalysis.

    During the period of 2016.11-2017.11, Associate Professor Yujun Zhao visited Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and collaborated with distinguished Professor Johannes Lercher, who is the director of Institute for Integrated Catalysis in PNNL, also the Vice President of German Catalysis Society. They are now collaborating on biomass conversion and fundamental aspects in hydrogenation/hydrodeoxygenation catalysis. One of their collaborated work in acetic acid hydrogenation has been published in ChemComm as an inside cover story. (ChemComm, 2018, 54, 8818-8821, DOI:10.1039/C8CC03649G) Some other collaboration research work is on the way.

    After about 3 weeks of hard preparation by master students of grade one, our 2016-2017 annual party was successfully held in Peiyang Campus, at January 14. More than 90 peoples including teachers, students and technicians came here and had a great time in the party.We sang. David, a Ph.D. student of grade two, played guitar and sang an elegant song “Chengdu” on his own. We laughed, the short sketch “Four Wit” prepared by all master students in grade one also made everyone amused a lot. We dance, five beautiful girls brought us vigorous dance.     After about 3 weeks of hard preparation by master students of grade one, our 2016-2017 annual party was successfully held in Peiyang Campus, at January 14. More than 90 peoples including teachers, students and technicians came here and had a great time in the party.



    We sang. David, a Ph.D. student of grade two, played guitar and sang an elegant song “Chengdu” on his own. We laughed, the short sketch “Four Wit” prepared by all master students in grade one also made everyone amused a lot. We dance, five beautiful girls brought us vigorous dance. And We played games, interesting and funny games cheered all the people a lot!

    2018.11.12-2018.11.17, Prof. Russell Howe visited us and gave a lecture name “Catalytic Chemistry of Methanol to Hydrocarbons Investigated with Vibrational Spectroscopies”. We have made a detailed plan for collaborative research in the next three years. This visit is part of Royal Society International Collaboration Project between Aberdeen University (Prof. Russell Howe) and Tianjin University (Prof. Xinbin Ma) on “Efficient Production of Transport Fuels and Chemicals from Methanol and Greenhouse Gas Carbon Dioxide”. This project aim to address two major challenges for China in the areas of energy and the environment: the rapidly rising demand for transport fuels from non-petroleum sources, and the need to reduce air pollution by converting the country's extensive coal reserves to cleaner burning fuels and chemical feedstocks.

  • Transfer of Clean Coal Technologies in APEC Regions

    Transfer of Clean Coal Technologies in A...

    Sustainable Development High-end Forum & APEC Project ‘Roadmap to Promote Transfer and Dissemination of Clean Coal Technologies in APEC Regions’ has been successfully held in Tianjin from Nov. 3rd to 5th, 2016. The Lead Shepherd of APEC Energy Work group, Jyuung-Shiauu Chern, and 18 representatives from 8 different economies including Australia, Chille, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia, and in APEC region attended the workshop, together with other representatives from the famous companies. Prof. Xinbin Ma, Dean of School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, chaired this conference as the Project Overseer. Prof. Shengping Wang, the Project Assistant, gave a report about the project progress and achievements in details. Experts from different enterprises of China were invited to make reports in terms of the application of Clean Coal Technology in different fields. Shiseng Xu, President of the Institute of Clean Energy Technology, China Huaneng Group, Ye Zhuang, Chief Scientist of the Department of Pollution Control and Recycling, State Grid, Lan Zhang, Chief Expert of Shenwu Research Institute, Yulong Zhang, Senior Researcher from Shenhua National Institute of Clean-and-Low-Carbon Energy , Jinfeng Ma, Professor of Northwest University, and Xiaoli Liu, Researcher from National Development and Reform Commission, attended the conference and presented speeches about their efforts in the dissemination and research of clean coal technology.The foreign representatives for oral presentations included Prof. Sang-Eon Park from Inha University (Korea), Mark Christian Marollano, Senior Researcher from the Bureau of Energy Policy Planning, Ministry of Energy (the Philippines), Prof. Alan Chaffee from Monash University (Australia), Dr. Danielle Kennedy from Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (Australia), Kensuke Saito, Deputy Head of Coal Department, the Ministry of Economic Trade and Industry (Japan), Keiji Makino, Senior Researcher from the Ministry of Coal Energy Central Strategy and Information (Japan), etc. Their researches were involved in the field of CO2 capture, storage and utilization, coal-fired power plant, coal-based chemical industry, etc. All attendees provided plenty of constructive suggestions and comments about the research projects as well as the development of sustainable energy in APEC regions.According to the conference routine, representatives from all economies visited the Analytic Instrumentation Center, the Basic Experiment Center of Chemical Engineering, and the labs of C1 Chemical Engineering of School of Chemical Engineering. After that they made an in-depth discussion and communication in terms of the research and education of Chemical Engineering and the policy in APEC regions. Experts and representatives exhibited intense interests in promoting the cooperation of the development and dissemination of clean coal technology in APEC regions. We believed that consensus achieved in this workshop will benefit to the development of sustainable energy in APEC regions, especially in scientific and industrial community.
